How can transnational Service-Learning be implemented?
3 Service-Learning Project Phases
The implementation of a Service-Learning project is typically divided into three phases: the preparation, the implementation, and the wrap-up. Each phase comprises specific steps and objectives that structure the project. In the preparation phase, the foundations are laid by exploring a real need, defining the subject matter and the competences to be developed, and planning the cooperation with a partner school. In the implementation phase, the students realize the planned civic engagement and regularly reflect on their progress and their academic learning. In the wrap-up phase, the students’ civic engagement is recognized and the project is jointly evaluated and reflected upon.
Reflection for personal guidance
The following checklist serves as a guide for implementing a transnational Service-Learning project. It can be adapted to individual project conditions, available time resources, and student age group: My Checklist
6 Quality Standards of Service-Learning
When working on their civic engagement project, students apply their knowledge to a real-life setting, gain experience, and develop academic, social, and democratic competences. In order for Service-Learning to reach its full potential, high-quality project implementation is crucial. Six interrelated quality standards provide teachers guidance on the didactic design of Service-Learning lessons: connection to the curriculum, reflection, participation, real demand, engagement outside the school, and recognition.
