Service-Learning is a form of teaching and learning that combines school-based learning with civic engagement, thereby fostering students’ academic and social skills.
Transnational Service-Learning projects can also promote intercultural understanding and a sense of global responsibility. These projects enable students to work together with their peers from other countries to identify real social, cultural, ecological, or political needs; gain new perspectives; and actively contribute to solving relevant challenges. Service-Learning is part of school lessons and is therefore always linked to content from subject curricula.
By working on a Service-Learning project, students engage with new learning content and apply their existing knowledge in a practical way, enabling them to deepen their learning through real-life experiences. In Service-Learning, students can strengthen their democratic competence by trying out democratic ways of acting and gaining hands-on experience—developing their attitudes and values, practical action, and knowledge and critical thinking.
